When the whole class had gotten on the bus, Mrs.. K. Motioned the thumbs- up sign at the bus driver. The bus driver nodded his head, and started up the bus. Mrs.. K. Leaned her head on the back of the first seat of the bus, and carefully pondered the moment when she thought Matt had forged his mothers signature. Just smiled and said, Well, we are already a half an hour away from school, so I guess youre Just coming with us. But when we get back to school, dont think that youre off the hook. Youll be spending a week with me in detention. Mrs.. K. Smiled again and walked away. Matt and Gabby Just looked after Mrs.. K. And Matt quietly sobbed, saying phrases like detention! Detention! and what will my mom say? Another half hour had passed before Matt had stopped his weeping. Gabby had her elbow leaning on the window. Her eyes kept fluttering, but she didnt want to go to sleep, because she didnt want to miss anything that happened. Gabby was thinking about nothing in particular. She Just wanted to go to the zoo, and come back. Just as Gabby was about o fall asleep, her elbow unexpectedly slipped down onto the sill of the window. This hurt Gabby elbow, and it started bleeding. Everybody in the bus was screaming. There were masses of shouting saying foolish things like, The bus is falling in quick sand, and Were all going to die! The bus was merely under the case of two flat tires. However, there was no gas station for three miles. The bus couldnt survive for even a minute with only two working tires. Mrs.. K. And the bus driver were talking about this inconvenient disaster. It seemed like hours when Mrs.. K. Finally turned award her class. The bus became pin-drop silent. We have tried to reach the school, but apparently, the signal is very bad out here. We have looked at the map, but the nearest gas station is pretty far away. If we want to get out of here, we are going to have to Mrs.. K. Hesitated, Push the bus. WHAT? screamed the class. The silence had turned into severe commotion in no time at all. Mrs.. K. Tried to clam the class down, but to no avail. Eventually the class figured out that they were not going to go anywhere until they pushed the bus to the gas station three miles ahead. So, he class filed out of the bus in an orderly fashion while Mrs.. K. Kept trying her phone. It was extremely hot outside, so by the time the bus was pushed, everyone was sweating. It took more than forty minutes for the bus to be pushed the whole three miles. Gratefully, the class took water bottles provided by the gas station. Finally, the class got to settle back on the bus. It was hotter in the bus than it was outside, so everybody opened their windows. Another half hour passed before Matt and Gabby got bored on the bus. They finished playing hand games, and word games, and they couldnt think of anything else to do. Ugh! exclaimed Gabby. Im so bored! Theres nothing to do, and the bus is extremely stuffed! Me too! whined Matt. Why couldnt they Just request a truck to haul us to the gas station? As Matt and Gabby thought up all the reasons why this field trip would be the worst, they, along with the rest of the class, had no idea what Mother Nature was cooking up for them. As soon as Gabby felt a raindrop on her shoulder, and looked outside the window, she knew that Mother Nature was being extremely cruel. It was raining cats and dogs! None of the meteorologists had predicted a severe storm. First a week of detention for Matt, flat tires on the bus, and now rain. What else could go wrong on this wacky field trip? The streets were almost flooded. There was a large amount of traffic. On top of that, the bus was moving exceptionally slow. Instead of having a half an hour left of the bus ride, the time doubled. The classs Jovial and buoyant mood was turned into a miserable and distressful mood. The once loud bus had turned down the volume a great deal. Cacao! sneezed one Cacao! Sneezed another. Cacao! Cacao! Cacao! sneezed the Wickers brothers. Suddenly the whole class started sneezing and coughing. Well, it is allergy season, commented Mrs.. K. In a wincing tone. She didnt know what to do. She finally faced the fact that this was the worst field trip ever to be taken. She had already given out a seven-day detention because of a forged signature. She got all sweaty, sticky, and dirty from pushing the bus three miles. Mrs.. K. Also got wet from the harsh storm. On top of that, the signal on her phone wouldnt work, and they were already delayed at arriving at the zoo. Mrs.. K. Oldest take it anymore. The whole class was becoming sick and there was no way they were going to make it to the zoo. Mrs.. K. , as well as the rest of the class, fell asleep, ignoring the fact that everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. On the bright side, the rain had stopped and the traffic decreased. When the class eventually got to the zoo, they were an hour late. Apparently, the tour guide had given up waiting and left. Because of the amount of work put into getting to the zoo, Mrs.. K. Decided to lead the group herself. The sky around them was still dark and cloudy, but the sky was starting to clear up. It was also extremely humid, with a slight wind. As Mrs.. K. Took attendance and went over the rules, Gabby became Jaded. She made a lets go motion with her hands aimed towards Matt. He got the signal and followed Gabby, without Mrs.. K. Suddenly Mrs.. K. Started panicking. She frantically searched through all the students. Oh no! First, he forges his mothers signature and now he has wandered off Where can he have gone? All at once, Mrs.. K. Also grasped the fact that Gabby was missing too. Mrs.. K. Started gathering up the class and talking about a search party. Okay, you guys go this way, and you guys go that way. She moved her hands frantically in the air, pointing her finger in different directions. When everybody was given their places to search, Mrs.. K. Said, Remember, when you find Matt or Gabby, make sure you yell as loud as you can. Okay, go ahead. The whole class rushed into the zoo, ready to search. All this while, when Mrs.. K. Was trying to calm herself, Matt and Gabby had finally realized that they had gotten lost. They didnt have a map with them, and they have never been to this zoo. Try and look for the entrance. As Matt and Gabby kept searching, they had no idea how far into the zoo they had gotten. In the front of the zoo, all of the small animals were shown, such as birds and monkeys. The middle of the zoo held water animals, such as reptiles and seals. Finally, the back of the zoo held large animals such as elephants and gorillas. These are the animals Matt and Gabby ran into. After several minutes of walking aimlessly around the zoo, Matt leaned on a few metal bars that were within his reach. Im so tired! How much longer will it take to find the entrance? However, two men had the courage to bring the real true story to the eyes of the public and it is to Richard Cook and Roger Boisjoly to whom we are thankful. Many lessons can be learned from this disaster to help prevent further disasters and to improve on organizations ethics. One of the many key topics behind the Challenger disaster is the organizational culture. One of the aspects of an organizational culture is the observable culture of an organization that is what one sees and hears when walking around an organization. There are four parts to the observable culture, stories, heroes, rites and rituals and symbols. The first one is stories, which is tales told among an organizations members. In the Challenger Space Shuttle incident there were mainly four organizations thrown together to form one, Morton Thiokol, Marshall Space Flight Center, Johnson Space Center and NASA Headquarters. All of these organizations had the same type of stories to be told. At Morton Thiokol, they talked about their product and their big deal, which they received from NASA. At NASA, its members retold stories of the previous space missions and being the first people to have landed on the moon. Second are their heroes. At Morton Thiokol, their heroes might have been the founders of the organization or its top executives like Charles Locke or Jerry Mason. At NASA, their heroes might have been Neil Armstrong, staff or any members of the organization. All of these people that were chosen to be heroes set the standards for that organization and conducted themselves for others to follow. Third are the rites and rituals those members of an organization conduct. Since both of these organizations work together to attain the same goal, a ritual for the organization is the celebration after each successful launch and landing of a space shuttle. A rite or ritual shows a since of group unity and friendship among the organizations members. Finally there are symbols that the organization uses, which has may carry a special meaning through its communication. Symbols in these organizations are very important because with these organizations line of work, symbols could mean the difference between life and death. For example, in the space shuttle there are different symbols on their controls. If an emergency light goes on they must know these symbols in order to fix the problem or abort the shuttle. All of these four aspects are centered on the organizations core culture. An organizations core culture is the beliefs about the right ways to behave. When Thiokol and NASA first started to plan for Challengers mission, it was part of their core culture, which ultimately caused the Challenger disaster. To an observer at both of these organizations dealing with the Challenger mission was that everything was perfect and right on schedule. The top executives in these organizations told their employees to be quite and act as if everything was fine. They did this so that the media and the people of the United States would believe and have great admiration for NASA. The Challenger was different then the previous missions because it was the first time a citizen would be going into outer space. At this time in these organizations time, it was essential to their futures to boost Americans opinion of the space program. The executives of these organizations knew how important this mission was t o their success and pushed for the mission to happen and for its employees to convince the people of the programs growth and success. In the direction in organizational culture, worker empowerment was highly stressed although top management did not listen. This was also very important in trying to prevent the Challenger disaster. Both Thiokol and NASA asked for employees opinion on whether the launch should be a go or were their problems that may arise. When the engineers gave their opinion that I was to dangerous for launch, the top executives refused to listen to them and voted to launch asking only for the top executives to vote. Overview of Viking Trading and Exchange Networks The Viking trade network included trading relationships into Europe, Charlemagnes Holy Roman Empire, into Asia, and the Islamic Abbasid empire. This is evidenced by the identification of items such as coins from North Africa recovered from a site in central Sweden and Scandinavian brooches from sites east of the Ural Mountains. Trade was a vital feature of the Norse Atlantic communities throughout their history and a way for the colonies to support their use of landnam, a sometime unreliable farming technique for environments the Norse didnt quite understand. Documentary evidence indicates that there were several groups of specific people who traveled between the Viking trading centers and other centers throughout Europe, as envoys, merchants or missionaries. Some travelers, such as the Carolingian missionary bishop Anskar (801-865) left extensive reports of their travels, giving us great insight to traders and their clients. Viking Trade Commodities The Norse traded commodities included slaves, but also coins, ceramics, and materials from specialized crafts such as copper-alloy casting and glass-working (beads and vessels both). The access to some commodities could make or break a colony: Greenlands Norse relied on trade in walrus and narwhal ivory and polar bear skins to support their ultimately failing farming strategies. Metallurgical analysis at Hrisbru in Iceland indicates that the elite Norse traded in bronze objects and raw material from the tin-rich regions in Britain. Significant trade in dried fish emerged near the end of the 10th century AD in Norway. There, cod played a significant role in Viking trade, when commercial fishing and sophisticated drying techniques allowed them to expand the market throughout Europe. Trade Centers In the Viking homeland, major trading centers included Ribe, Kaupang, Birka, Ahus, Truso, Grop Stromkendorf, and Hedeby. Goods were brought to these centers and then dispersed into the Viking society. Many of these site assemblages include an abundance of a soft yellow earthenware called Badorf-ware, produced in the Rhineland; Sindbà ¦k has argued that these items, rarely found on non-trading communities, were used as containers to bring goods to places, rather than as trade items. In 2013, Grupe et al. conducted stable isotope analysis of skeletal material at the Viking trade center of Haithabu (later Schleswig) in Denmark. They found that the diet of the individuals expressed in the human bones reflected the relative significance of trade over time. Members of the earlier community showed a predominance of freshwater fish (cod imported from the North Atlantic) in their diet, while later residents shifted to a diet of terrestrial domestic animals (local farming). Norse-Inuit Trade Theres some evidence in the Viking Sagas that trade played a role in the North American contact between the Norse and the Inuit occupants. Also, Norse symbolic and utilitarian objects are found at Inuit sites and similar Inuit objects in Norse sites. There are fewer Inuit objects in Norse sites, a fact which may be because the trade goods were organic, or that the Norse exported some Inuit prestige items into the wider European trade network. Evidence at the site of Sandhavn in Greenland seems to suggest that the quite rare co-existence of Inuit and Norse there was a result of the opportunity to trade with one another. Ancient DNA evidence from the Farm Beneath the Sand (GUS) site, also in Greenland, however, finds no support for the trade of bison robes, posited earlier from morphological examination. Viking and Islamic Trade Connections In a 1989 study of formal weights discovered at the Viking site of Paviken in Gotland near Vastergarn, Sweden, Erik Sperber reported three main types of trading weights in use: Ball-shaped weights of ironclad with a layer of bronze or solid bronze; these vary between 4 and 200 gmCubo-octaedric weights of lead bronze, tin bronze or brass; up to 4.2 gramsLeaden weights of different shapes and sizes Sperber believes at least some of these weights conform to the Islamic system of the Ummayyad dynasty leader Abd al Malik. The system, established in 696/697, is based on the dirhem of 2.83 grams and the mitqa of 2.245 grams. Its Time to End Poverty in America Essay -- Break the Cycle of Povert

For those who live an impoverished life, it is difficult to participate in society. They are left behind in our cultural movement because they lack the necessities to be on an equal level with the rest of society. Because the poor cannot get their basic needs for life, they cannot improve their well-being; therefore, our society as a whole cannot efficiently move in new directions. As Jo Goodwill Parker states in "What is Poverty," she does not have luxuries. Luxuries of the impoverished are what we would consider our basic needs such as food, water, transportation and shelter. Simply getting adequate food is difficult, but not the main problem for the poor. As Parker states, her children "do not suffer from hunger, [her] seventy-eights dollars keeps [them] alive, but they do suffer from malnutrition" (63). The poor also suffer from a lack of clean water. Their water is often dirty and can not be heated to clean it or to clean anything else properly because of their lack of funds for gas and electricity. Parker must wash the dishes she has "in cold water and no soap ... hot water is a luxury. [She] does not have luxuries" (61). The money for the soap that she cannot afford must be saved for her baby's diapers, and she can not afford to use it for anything else. The poor can not afford soap, nor can they afford transportation, whether it is a car or publi c transportation. Those who are not lucky enough to live in an area with public transportation must find other means to get around. As Parker says, she must find a way to pay her neighbor "one way or another" for the rides to the health clinic (63). For those of us who have easy access to transportation, it is hard to imagine living without a vehicle in our family a... ...ng, then our nation will soon run into the problem that countries like Angola have, where the rich are rich but the poor are barely alive and there is no in between. If our efforts to advance ourselves in science and other areas cannot be put to use to improve the well-being of everyone living on our country and make a difference, then we need to change them. Poverty is a problem throughout the nation, and we must do something to correct it.
